2011 PROMENADE

In the US and Canada, a prom, short for promenade, is a formal dance, or gathering of high school students. Prom is known as the last hurrah of the school year for seniors.

At prom, a Prom Queen and Prom King may be revealed. Other students may be honored with inclusion in a "Prom Court". Prom Queen and Prom King are honorary titles awarded to students chosen in a school-wide vote prior to the prom. Prom Queen and King is an honor usually given to seniors.

The high school prom may have originated in the United State, but its roots come from traditional European formal affairs that have been going on since before America was even discovered. In England, the high school prom is called a “Debutante’s Ball”. It was parent’s love of formal events and their desire to teach their children something about culture and etiquette that brought about the development of the first high school prom in the 1930’s.

As you prepare for your high school prom this year, think about all the young adults around the world who are doing exactly the thing. The prom is a way to celebrate youth at a large, formal party. Everyone’s goal no matter what part of world you come from is to have a good time and enjoy the company of friends on prom night.

The prom committee at your school has most likely spent hours planning this event. Themes, music, after-prom events, as well as location are just a few of the logistics to be taken care. Decorations and prom souvenirs, snacks and beverages are as well taken care of by the prom committee. Part of the fun of the prom is helping to decorate. After the prom many parents will assist with the cleaning up and the after prom activities.

Prom can be an expensive time. In a survey of teen girls across the country, prom expenses ranged from $800 to just over $300.

1. Prom Dress: Your prom dress may take up the largest percentage of your budget. Prom dresses vary widely in price. Prom dresses maybe worn once, so resell boutiques maybe a great place to look for a prom dress with limited funds.
2. Dress Accessories: Your accessory list may include shoes, purse, jewelry, and any special undergarments you may need to wear with your dress.
3. Beauty: Your beauty budget includes the cost for hair, make-up, and nails. While it can be fun to have your beauty treatments done professionally, doing one another’s nails and hair can be just as much fun and a great way to start out the day.
4. Photography: You will want to have great pictures to help you remember your prom. Whether a professional photographer, mom shots or shots at the dance, take pictures to remember the last splash of your senior year.
5. Transportation: If you are taking a limousine to the prom, remember to book this early. Many areas have a very limited number of limos for use. If not a limo, your car with a little cleanup can be just as fun.
6. Tickets: Get your ticket early; some dances are limited by the number of attendees due to the location of the dance.
7. Dinner: Reserve your favorite restaurant early, prom night is a busy evening for the food industry. Each community has its favorite restaurants for the young crowd. Eating together can be a large part of the evening, whether at a restaurant, catered or mom’s favorite meal, make certain the food is taken care for the evening.
8. Boutonniere and Corsage: The boutonniere and flowers for your date should be the last item on your priority list. Many women’s formal gown are made of a fabric that does not like pins, so more and more young women are going to wrist corsage.

The prom is a special event in your teen’s life that you’ll want to document. Having pictures will keep the memories of the good time forever. Here is a list of photo poises for prom time:

Alcohol awareness month is April of each year because it is the beginning of the prom and graduation season, a time when celebrations can turn dangerous. Many communities conduct anti-drinking campaigns during the month aimed at curtailing alcohol use before, during and after the special events. Statistics show that Prom-Graduation season - the months of April, May and June - are the most dangerous time for teens. One-third of all teen deaths involving teens each year occur during those months.

Be safe and have a great prom this year.
